heritage : land of art and creed

Professeur Pierre Dompnier.
Probably the most important work of its kind in Europe, this group of 81 stalls decorated with dog-faced baboons, frogs, monkeys, ram’s heads and other assorted “monsters” is puzzling in its amazing complexity. Professor Dompnier will help you get to the bottom of it all.

The Saint-Jean cathedral : the secret of the stalls

Dating from 1498 and attributed to the Genovese artisan Pierre Mochet, this masterpiece sculpted in walnut survived to the present day thanks to a cabinet-maker, who acquired it with the objective of rescuing it from the fury of the Revolution (1792). The cathedral, which is a magnificent stone setting for this masterpiece in wood, was built between the 11th and 15th centuries. But its current appearance is more recent. The porch was added by the princes of the House of Savoie in the 18th century to shelter the recumbent statue of the founder of the dynasty, Humbert aux Blanches Mains.
