Beech and conifers on the northern side of the mountain, between 1,000 and 1,600 metres in altitude. Spruce forests starting at 1,700 metres. A subalpine range where the Arolla or Swiss stone pine ("Cembro" pine) flourish, competing with the larch against backgrounds of moor studded with rhododendron. High-altitude bare, stark landscapes yielding to pastures and lakes in an increasingly mineral environment. The Maurienne exhibits a dazzling palette of natural landscapes, from the leafy forests of the Hurtières to the mountain pastures of the Arves, and the panoramic "balconies" of the Bugeon Valley to the high-mountain lakes of the Vanoise.
