A Breton-style dolmen |
|
| Neither Brittany nor Stonehenge has a monopoly on dolmens, menhirs and other cromlechs. The proof is found in Le Thyl-Dessus, between Saint-Jean and Modane. |
A path, marked off with stones engraved with human footprints (once again!), leads to an impressive megalith laid-out in the fashion of a dolmen (i.e. a protohistoric funeral monument). A votive axe made from polished stone was discovered at the site and is now exhibited in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne’s museum.
For aficionados of this type of thing, a cromlech (a stone circle marking off an area devoted to ceremonial rites), can be seen in Maurienne, at Fontcouverte.
